Big Ed's Piano Gallery Care and Maintenance
   About Us
The piano you purchase from us will provide a lifetime of enjoyment, when properly cared for and maintained. Here are some tips on piano maintenance.

Placement
Pianos require some basic environmental conditions for a long and useful life. Temperatures ranging from 72 to 75F, relative humidity from 42% to 50%, and protection from direct sunlight all should be considered before you position your piano. Humidity surrounding your piano can be damaging to its performance and longevity. Extreme dryness can weaken internal glue joints. Too much moisture can cause rusting of metal parts, swelling of wood components, and changes in the action mechanisms. Avoid placement near fireplaces, heating or cooling vents, radiators, or air conditioners. Sunlight provides heat that will cause the wood to move and can cause cracking or fading to your finish. Also avoid drafty areas of your home.

Humidity Control
Big Ed highly recommends the use of a humidity control system to preserve and maintain the condition of your piano. Since 1947, Dampp-Chaser Corporation has worked to provide the best technology available to protect pianos like yours from the damaging effects of environmental changes. With a Dampp-Chaser Piano Life Saver climate control system installed out of sight in your piano, you will immediately notice greater tuning stability. The piano will sound the way it was meant to, day after day. Major piano manufacturers agree on the benefits of this climate control system.

The climate control system is made up of three basic components which work together to control the humidity levels within your piano to maintain the recommended average 42% relative humidity, no matter what the external conditions are. The three components are:

  • Humidistat - this is the brain of the system, which senses whether your piano is too moist or too dry
  • Dehumidifier - carries moisture away from your piano using warm air currents when humidity levels rise
  • Humidifier - moisturizes the dry wood of your piano when the humidity drops below 42%

We only sell Dampp-Chaser Piano Life Saver systems. For more information, please visit their website at: www.pianolifesaver.com. For a free estimate of a Dampp-Chase Piano Life Saver System for your piano, please contact us with your name, daytime telephone number, and the make and model of your piano (if there is no model indication, just measure the length of your grand piano or the height of your upright piano). Example: Yamaha G-3 6'1".

Finish
Routine dusting with a dry, soft, clean cloth will help to keep your instrument's finish beautiful. We recommend that you do not use furniture polish. Do not place items (frames, art objects, vases, etc.) on your piano. If anything should fall or spill inside the piano, contact us immediately. Do not attempt to clean inside your piano, rely upon our technician to handle this for you. To remove most stubborn marks and soil, lightly moisten a soft, clean, lint-free cloths with diluted glassplus and gently wipe the finish in the direction of the grain. Piano keys should also be dusted. Do not spray any liquids on to any part of the piano. Always spray on the cloth and never use too much liquid.

Use
Practice will improve your skills and help to keep your piano in good playing condition. Pianos that aren't played deteriorate more rapidly than those that are played regularly. When your piano isn't being played you should run your fingers up and down the keyboard at least once per week.

Regular Professional Care
It is your responsibility to have your piano maintained and tuned by our Service Department at least once a year. We recommend it be done twice yearly.
Please contact us immediately if you have any problems or concerns.
